G.O.S.P.E.L.

We took a group to the Dare2Share conference this year, and one of the main themes was sharing the G.O.S.P.E.L. They had a great acronym for the students to memorize to help them share their faith.
God created us to be with him
Our sins seperate us from Him
Sins cannot be removed by good deeds
Paying the price for sin Jesus died and rose again
Everyone who believes will have eternal life
Life with Christ starts now and lasts forever
Over the next couple weeks were going to be talking about each letter, what they truly mean, and where you can find them in the bible. This week we focused on G and O. God created us for two reasons. One is to work. God has given every person on the planet a talent and a passion for something. In Genesis 2:15, God places the man in the garden to tend and watch over it (to work). No matter what your passion in life is; whether it's gaming, hunting, music, dancing, etc. you can use that gift for God. In Ecclesiastes 2:24 it says there is nothing better for a man than to find satisfaction in his work. God has given you a talent and a passion, and we're called to use it to glorify Him.
Secondly God created us to be with Him. In Genesis 3:8, Adam and Eve hear God walking in the garden. Adam and Eve got to hang out with God. He walked around the garden with them; He created them to be with him. "God created all of us to be with him." Everyone is born with an emptiness inside that only God can fill. That emptiness comes from the fact that God created us to live life with Him. Unfortunately, "Our sins seperate us from Him." In Genesis 2:9-17, God puts two trees in the middle of the garden. The tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God said that Adam and Eve could eat from any tree in the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
I don't know about you, but if I had the choice between eternal life and the knowledge of good and evil, I think I would take the eternal life. But if we really think about it, were still faced with that same choice every day of our lives. God has created us to be with Him, and sin is choosing to turn your back on God; chosing evil over eternal life. In Romans 3:23 Paul says, "Everyone has sinned," and that sin separates us from a perfect and Holy God.
The good news in Romans 6:23 tells us, "The free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ." Jesus paid the price for our sins so we could be with Him today. Heaven doesn't start when you die, you enter God's kingdom the second you put your faith and trust in Him. We all have a choice today to live with Christ, and if were already doing that we are called to share this message with the world.

Crazy
Tweet
We continued our series on "What God Wants" this week. Last week we talked about the fact that God wants something from all of us (for a summary check out last weeks post). God has a plan and a purpose for all our lives and were supposed to take time to think about and seek after that plan. However, were often shocked when we find it, because at first it might seem a little crazy. Following God's plan can take us out of our comfort zones and put us into situations we never would have imagined.
Our scripture came from 1 Samuel 17:45-47. God calls David to face a giant and when the whole Israelite army is scared to death David stands up and declares that he's going to give the Phillistines carcass to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field. If that wasn't crazy enough in 1 Samuel 24:6-7 David has an opportunity to kill Saul, the man who has been trying everything he can to kill him. David spares his life because he remembers that Saul is God's chosen king. In Acts 13:22 Paul says that David was a man after God's own heart.
David had faith in God, he knew that no matter what God asked of him or how crazy it seemed that God would give him the strength to do it. No matter where your at in your life it's never to late to seek after God's will. You have to put your faith and trust in God, seek after his purpose for you life, and know that no matter how crazy it might seem he will give you the strength to endure.

That's My King
Tweet
For the next couple weeks were going to be talking about "What God Wants", so we watched this video and the one directly below this post as examples of people doing something for God. The video below is a youth band in California singing "Came to My Rescue" by Hillsong United, and this video is an exerpt from a message by the evangelist SM Lockridge entitled "That's My King". Each of these video's gave me goose bumps and brought tears to my eyes the first time I watched them. The gospel has the power to change lives, and Jesus Christ changed mine in a very personal way. So when I watch these video's it brings me right back to that time when God reached down and completely turned my life around. Just like the people in the video's and the people who created them God has something each of us can do to serve him.
Our scripture came from Genesis 4:7. Cain and Abel have brought their offerings, and God respected Abel's but did not respect Cain's. Cain is upset and God tells him there's no reason to be angry, if you do well you will be accepted but if you don't sin lies at the door and it will rule over you. This is so true even today, God has created us for a purpose and if we take some time to seek out God's plan for our lives and follow it we will be accepted. But if we run from God and try to ignore the calling He's placed on our lives sin does lie at the door and it will consume us. What has God called you to do, and are you doing it?

I promise this will be my last Tron analogy, but I felt like this was to good to pass up. In the movie Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) creates a computer world known as "the grid". Flynn accesses the grid through a portal which only stays open for eight hours, because of the amount of energy it takes to keep it open in the real world. In the grid the portal looks like a bright star in the sky miles away from the city. The people living in the grid are trapped and cannot escape on their own. One of them explains that whenever Flynn is in the world he can see the portal and it gives him hope that there is something more out there.
In John 3: 14-15 Jesus tells Nicodemus that "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so must the son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." This is the hope which Christ offers. The Bible also says we are slaves to sin, and just like the people in the grid there is no way we can set ourselves free. But God has not left us in this world to suffer alone. He sent his son to die for us so that we can know there is more to this world and we can experience that freedom if we just put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

TRON: LEGACY Official Trailer
Tweet
Trish and I went to see Tron with the youth group this Wednesday. The graphics during the action sequences were amazing. I hadn't read the comics or seen the original movie, but the story line seemed a bit lacking for me. There was one part of the movie however that I loved and I felt really stuck out and carried the theme. (SPOILER ALERT) Towards the end of the movie, when Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn) is talking to Sam on the way to the portal he explains why he created the grid. He had tried to attain perfection in the real world and when he realized it wasn't possible he tried to create a place where perfection might be possible; this is also the reason why he created CLU. He tells Sam that although perfection isn't possible it is right in front of us every day, and the best way to live is to chase after it no matter what happens in life.
This revelation is also similar to one of my favorite songs "Embracing Accusation" by Shane and Shane click here for the song and lyrics. It talks about how Satan, the father of lies, sings us a song but actually tells us the truth. He whispers in our ears "cursed are the one's who can't abide". My favorite part of the song is towards the end, when it says "he's forgotten the refrain, Jesus saves". The Bible says all have fallen short, so it is true that we are cursed because we can't abide, just like Flynn realized perfection is impossible for us. But Galatians 3:13 says that Jesus Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. We are called to put our faith and trust in this promise and to strive everyday for that perfection which Christ offers.
